Axel van Trotsenburg, World Bank Senior Managing Director

At the World Bank Group, our mission is clear: to end poverty on a livable planet.

Investing in nature is not just good for the environment, it is essential for the economy.

As one of the largest multilateral financiers of nature, the World Bank Group provides the finance, knowledge, and innovation needed to sustainably manage biodiversity and wildlife, and drive long-term growth.

Through the Global Wildlife Program supported by the Global Environment Facility, we are creating jobs and opportunities in nature-based tourism while protecting biodiversity.

The numbers speak for themselves. For every dollar governments invest in protected areas and nature-based tourism, the rate of return is at least six times the original investment, boosting jobs and local economies.

In South Africa, our “Rhino Bond” is mobilizing private capital to protect the critically endangered black rhino population.

This World Wildlife Day, join us on our mission to ensure a livable planet for all – one where wildlife, people, and economies thrive.
