Dr Musonda Mumba

This year, the celebration of World Wildlife Day holds even greater significance as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

As we celebrate this important milestone, let us reflect on the critical theme for this year: Wildlife Conservation Finance.

From wetlands that store carbon and mitigate flooding to forests that host 80% of amphibians and 75% of bird species, the ecosystems surrounding us are the lifeblood of our planet. Yet over one million species face the threat of extinction. Despite this dire reality, the funding required to protect these ecosystems falls significantly short.

However, there is hope. Innovative financial mechanisms and nature-based solutions are paving the way for transformative opportunities in wildlife conservation. These initiatives not only safeguard habitats but also empower local communities and align economic systems with environmental priorities. For instance, wetlands provide food, water, and livelihoods to billions of people worldwide. By investing in their protection, we are ultimately protecting ourselves.

World Wildlife Day 2025 is a celebration of action and collaboration. It is a call to governments, businesses, and individuals alike to invest in a resilient future for all life on Earth. This occasion invites us to champion innovative solutions, foster partnerships, and reframe wildlife conservation—not as a cost, but as a vital investment in our shared planet. Together, we can create a legacy of sustainability and hope for generations to come.
